Strategic Planning

We can work with your Board and Staff teams to develop an organisational strategy, usually for the next three years. This would usually start from establishing your Vision, Mission, and Values, considering where you want to be in 3-5 years’ time and setting goals and objectives.

Firstly, the process of producing the plan will be discussed with you so that we understand the key stakeholders who would need to be consulted and we would consider having an away day as part of the process.

The next step we would take would be to understanding the environment in which the charity works, the key competitors, collaborators and of course strengths and opportunities.

We would look at the resources needed to deliver the plan and also fundraising/income and marketing strategy. We would look at how you will measure success and the key performance indicators you will use to monitor progress. This would be supported by an evaluation of organisational risk around achieving the plan. We would expect that the plan would tie into a 3-year financial prediction.

A goal without a plan is just a wish

Charity Start Up/Launch

We assist clients wishing to register a charity in England and Wales (with the Charity Commission)

We can advise you on the best type of legal organisation to set up as a charity. There are 3 options and you have to choose one to set up:-

  • an unincorporated body (association)
  • company limited by guarantee
  • a charitable incorporated association

The Charity Commission both have strict regulations regarding what is a charitable activity. We ensure that the charitable objects are correctly drafted to suit your activities.

The next step is usually to open a bank account.

We will also help you with the initial policies and procedures you will need to have in place such as safeguarding.

We can help recruit the first staff and facilitate an initial fundraising plan and/or business plan.

We can also help with a brand, logo, and website.

Governance Reviews

Every organisation needs to be supported by a sound management structure in order to deliver an effective service in an efficient manner.

Charities can be constituted in various forms, from unincorporated trusts to companies limited by guarantee under company law (like the Griffin Institute) or Charitable Incorporated Organisations (CIOs) under charity law. For all these charities, the reality is that the board of trustees, who are ultimately responsible for the strategic vision, direction and service delivery of the entity, are often remote from the day to day management activity carried out by the executive team. Nevertheless, the trustee board has ultimate responsibility for the governance of the charity, for safeguarding its assets and hence for its general well-being. It is extremely important that trustees are fully aware of their responsibilities and understand the steps they need to take to ensure that their charity is properly governed. This is particularly relevant in times of change and with the financial constraints and uncertainties that many charities face.

A governance review is an opportunity to reflect on a charity’s governance arrangements.

For example, a review might update a charity’s governance arrangements to account for changes in the organisation’s size. A review is also a useful means of ensuring trustees keep up with latest best practice or changes in the law.

It is good practice for trustees to carry out some form of governance review annually on their own and with external assistance every 3 to 5 years.

We can assist the Board of Trustees to agree the framework for a Governance Review that best suits the charity or NFP and we can manage the review on behalf of the Trustees making appropriate recommendations.

As part of this we would recommend the implementation of a Trustee Manual.

Financial Management

Charity Street believe excellent financial stewardship within charities and not for profits is non-negotiable if you are to maximise your impact and make a difference for the people or projects you exist to support. But too often it can seem difficult, overly complex or something that only accountants can hope to understand. Most Boards we work with take the responsibility for their charity’s financial position very seriously, but often have concerns about whether the reports they receive and the actions they take are doing the job properly. We can work with you to produce the management information that the Board requires and to develop financial strategy.
